Match Preview

Kicking off Sunday afternoon action in Round 24 is the Tigers hosting the Sea Eagles at Allianz Stadium. A battle between two sides desperate to keep their finals aspirations alive. The Sea Eagles are poised in 10th position, two points behind the Dolphins and the Roosters, who sit in eighth and ninth respectively. The Tigers sit further back in 12th, with another loss likely to spell the end of their finals chances. The recent head-to-head record is heavily in the Sea Eagles’ favour – they’ve won seven of their last eight games against the Tigers, including a game in round 17 earlier this year, which they won 28-10.

For the Tigers, Starford To’a is named to return from a shoulder injury that kept him out of last week’s win, causing Brent Naden to drop out of the 17. Alex Seyfarth is out suspended, with Alex Twal starting at lock, and Fonua Pole moving into the starting side at prop. Charlie Murray joins the bench in place of Seyfarth.

After a huge upset victory over the Bulldogs in torrential conditions in round 22, the Tigers will be hoping they can bottle that form and unleash it on the Sea Eagles this week. Adam Doueihi was exceptional in the wet. Moved to halfback just prior to kick-off, he played a hand in many of the Tigers’ tries and didn’t look at all hampered by the conditions. He lines up at halfback again this week, where he’ll look to attack the Sea Eagles’ edge defence that’s proven to leak points over the past few weeks. His combination with Jarome Luai and Api Koroisau continues to grow. Koroisau in particular loves playing against the Sea Eagles – he’s scored three tries in his last four games against them.

For the Sea Eagles, Jake Trbojevic is out with concussion, with Jazz Tevaga replacing him at lock. Ben Trbojevic returns in the second row, with Michael Chee Kam dropping to the reserves. Lehi Hopoate is back on the wing, which shifts Reuben Garrick to centre, and Tommy Talau back to the bench.

The Sea Eagles were unable to capitalise on a fast start against the ladder-topping Raiders last week in Canberra. On a positive note, Tom Trbojevic played another game at fullback and looked as comfortable as he has all year. Back running freely again, he’ll be a threat everywhere he bobs up on the park. If the rain stays away, they’ll be looking to throw the ball around and stretch the Tigers’ defence to target their outside backs out wide, something the Bulldogs struggled with in the wet last week. They’ve got the skill players to pile on the points, but it remains to be seen if they can improve enough defensively to get a win over the Tigers, who have a renewed sense of confidence.
