Match Preview
The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks return to their home fortress as they take on the Gold Coast Titans for the only encounter between the two in the 2025 season at Sharks Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Sharks head back to Cronulla still feeling the sting of defeat from their last start against the Dragons and will be hoping they can maul a Titans side that has struggled to find any sort of consistency this season. The Sharks sit precariously in seventh and need to keep winning to ensure they stay in control of their own finals destiny while for the Titans, a defeat to fellow cellar dwellers South Sydney leaves them languishing at the bottom of the ladder.
When the Sharks attack is quiet, a lot of the criticism seems to fall on halfback Nicho Hynes, but his halves partner Braydon Trindall needs to shoulder his fair share of the blame with the Sharks unable to put the Dragons away. Trindall was very quiet with ball in hand, only running the ball four times in the 80 minutes and the Sharks need to get more out of their six when the game is on the line to avoid being predictable in attack.
He may be in the news for reasons that leaves Titans fans shaking in their boots, but fans will put it all aside for 80 minutes as the club’s fearless leader Tino Fa’asuamaleuai returns in a huge boost for a side desperately running out of chances to avoid the wooden spoon. The lock forward makes his first appearance for the Titans since their defeat to the Tigers at Leichhardt and will leave nothing in the tank as he does everything he can to will his side to a win.
Nicho Hynes goes toe-to-toe with Jayden Campbell in the battle of the halfbacks. Both have the attacking ability to turn a game on its head at any given moment and if either can find the front foot early with their running games, the opposition could find themselves a few tries down before they even know what hits them. Expect plenty of traffic coming each of their ways as the opposition tries to nullify their lethal attacking abilities.
Cronulla have had the Titans number in recent years, winning nine of their last ten including running riot at CBUS Super stadium last year on their way to a 44-0 win.
In team list news, the Sharks bring in Mawene Hiroti and Jesse Colquhoun to replace the injured Jesse Ramien and the suspended Briton Nikora. While lining up on the other side, the Titans welcome back Phillip Sami, Moe Fotuaika, Tony Francis and the aforementioned Tino while dynamic Kiwi’s fullback Keano Kini made his return in Queensland Cup last week and looms on the extended bench and could be a late inclusion come game day.
