South Sydney Rabbitohs are bracing for a significant roster turnover at the end of the 2025 season, with nine players confirmed or expected to move on. The departures range from retirements to overseas signings and contract releases, leaving the club with gaps across multiple positions heading into 2026.

Host and Mitchell Among Forwards Yet to Re-Sign

Jacob Host and Shaquai Mitchell, both key members of the Rabbitohs’ forward rotation, remain without deals for 2026. While the club hasn’t ruled out retaining them, neither has secured a contract extension. Their future in the NRL remains uncertain, with rival clubs monitoring the situation.

Havili Expected to Head to Super League

Veteran utility forward Siliva Havili is heavily linked with a move to Super League, with St Helens emerging as the frontrunner for his signature. Havili’s experience and versatility have proven valuable for Souths, but at 32, a final overseas stint appears likely.

Lovett Forced Into Early Retirement

One of the most heartbreaking exits is that of Ben Lovett, who announced his medical retirement this week at just 23 years old. The promising young forward’s career has been cut short by ongoing health issues, robbing South Sydney of a long-term prospect and leaving fans to wonder what might have been.

Ravalawa and Mellars Off to England and New Zealand

The Rabbitohs’ outside backs will also undergo a shake-up:

  • Mikaele Ravalawa has already inked a three-year deal with Castleford Tigers, beginning in 2026. The Fijian international brings power and finishing ability, and Castleford have described his signing as a major coup. (Read more here)
  • Rising star Haizyn Mellars, son of former Warrior Vince Mellars, has committed to the New Zealand Warriors until the end of 2028. His departure is a blow to South Sydney’s future depth in the backs.

Young Guns and Fringe Players Moving On

  • Fletcher Myers remains unsigned for 2026, leaving his future in the balance.
  • Gerome Burns is also expected to move on, though no destination has yet been confirmed.
  • Josh Schuster, once considered one of the NRL’s brightest prospects, has been released and is currently without a club for next year.

What It Means for South Sydney

With nine departures across multiple positions, the Rabbitohs’ squad will look very different come 2026. The loss of forwards like Havili, Lovett, and potentially Host and Mitchell will test South Sydney’s middle rotation, while the exits of Ravalawa and Mellars reduce strike power in the backs.

The club will be forced to lean heavily on recruitment and development pathways, with several roster spots now open for younger players or marquee signings.

For Souths fans, 2026 will mark the beginning of a new era — one that will require patience, but also brings opportunity.
