The Rugby Football League (RFL) has confirmed that Wakefield Trinity have been awarded a 48-0 victory over Salford Red Devils after the Round 22 Betfred Super League fixture, scheduled for Sunday, August 17, was cancelled.
In a statement, the governing body explained:
“Following the cancellation of the Round 22 Betfred Super League fixture between Salford Red Devils and Wakefield Trinity which was scheduled for Sunday August 17, the RFL Board have ruled that the match should be awarded to Wakefield Trinity with a scoreline of 48-0.
This is in line with Operational Rule B1:23, and taking into account the circumstances behind Salford’s cancellation of the fixture, and the advanced stage of the Betfred Super League season.”
A Season of Struggles for Salford
The Red Devils’ 2025 campaign has been one to forget. The club has endured a run of 19 defeats in 21 matches, managing just two wins all season while conceding a staggering 940 points.
Sunday’s cancellation and subsequent forfeit only deepens Salford’s woes, as the RFL’s ruling locks in another heavy defeat on their record. The 48-0 scoreline mirrors the standard result awarded under Super League operational rules when a team is unable to fulfil a fixture.
Wakefield Benefit in Playoff Push
For Wakefield, the decision adds a crucial two competition points to their tally as they continue their push to climb the table in the closing rounds of the regular season. The additional points could prove valuable in shaping the playoff picture as the season nears its conclusion. In their return to the Super League competition this year, Wakefield are one point outside the top 6 with Hull FC just one point ahead in 6th place.
