Round 17

Brisbane (20, +64), Sydney Roosters (20, +16), Penrith (19, +3), The Dolphins (18, +162) rounded out the top eight.
Canberra reached top spot with a win over Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium. It was almost a re-run of their Wests Tigers win in round 16: Canberra lead 16-0 at half-time and weathered a Newcastle fightback. Former Raider James Schiller scored a double, while Jed Stuart’s try in the 57th minute (his second try in two games) gave Canberra enough breathing space.
Penrith beat Canterbury-Bankstown in arguably the best game of the season. There was one try each at CommBank Stadium – Dylan Edwards’ penalty goal in the 27th minute was the difference. There was drama from the kick-off when Canterbury’s Daniel Suluka-Fifita received a head knock on the first tackle, was taken off for a HIA, and never returned. Leading 6-2 at half-time, Canterbury was held scoreless in the second half, with Nathan Cleary scoring to give Penrith the lead in the 53rd minute.
Brisbane moved closer to the top four with a win against the NZ Warriors at Suncorp Stadium. The game was sold out (part of a Saturday double-header with the Dolphins vs South Sydney game) and the Broncos responded with an 18-0 half-time lead. The Warriors got within eight points with 14 minutes left (tries to Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Leka Halasima) before Gehamat Shibasaki’s second try put the game away. The Warriors’ loss was compounded by injuries to Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Luke Metcalf, who both left the game early.
Melbourne won their fourth straight game, beating Cronulla-Sutherland at AAMI Park. While the final score looked convincing, it took a while for Melbourne to put the game to bed, with tries to Nick Meaney, Jahrome Hughes, and Trent Loiero in the final 16 minutes. Though the win was soured by a hamstring injury to Sualauvi Faalogo (who scored a try in the 26th minute and narrowly missed a second try in the second half).
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow scored four tries in The Dolphins’ win over South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium. It was the Dolphins’ third 50+ score this season after leading 30-6 at half-time, with Jamayne Isaako kicking nine goals from nine. Jack Wighton and Tallis Duncan both scored doubles for Souths.
Reuben Garrick scored 12 points (a try and four goals) in Manly Warringah’s win over the Wests Tigers at 4 Pines Park; St George Illawarra beat Parramatta at WIN Stadium (Nathan Lawson and Valentine Holmes both scored doubles); North Queensland defeated the Gold Coast at Cbus Super Stadium (12 points to Scott Drinkwater: two tries and two goals).
