The Australian Rugby League Commission has confirmed Kevin Walters as the new Kangaroos coach for the 2025 Ashes Tour, while extending Jillaroos coach Jess Skinner’s tenure through the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

Chairman Peter V’landys said both appointments would strengthen Australia’s men’s and women’s national programs.

“As Kangaroo number 612, Walters is very well placed to lead the national team on a historic tour to the UK. Kevin has played for the Kangaroos, coached at the highest levels with the Broncos and Queensland Maroons, and toured with the Kangaroos as a player. His leadership and pedigree make him a natural fit.”

Walters, a six-time Premiership winner with Canberra and Brisbane, played 20 State of Origin matches for Queensland and 11 Tests for the Kangaroos, including the 1990 and 1994 Kangaroo Tours.

He said the opportunity was a career highlight.

“It’s truly an honour and a privilege to coach the Kangaroos,” Walters said. “Playing on a Kangaroo Tour was always a pinnacle as a player, so to lead the team on the Ashes Tour is incredibly humbling and exciting.”

Skinner said she was honoured to continue with the Jillaroos.

“Coaching at this level has been a fantastic experience, and to lead the Jillaroos through the 2026 World Cup is a huge opportunity. The women’s game is growing rapidly, and it’s a privilege to be part of that journey.”

The Kangaroos’ 2025 Ashes Tour will include Tests at Wembley Stadium, Everton Stadium, and Headingley.

The Jillaroos will compete in the Pacific Championships this October.
