Check out what happened in Round 15 of the Betfred Super League.
Round 15 Results
Castleford Tigers 0 – 48 Hull KR
Hull KR continued their imperious form to leave no doubt that they are the best team in the league, with Wigan dropping points at Wakefield the following day. An even better second half backed up a dominant first by the Robins, who were unwilling to lose their focus and intensity even when the game was won – the sign of a true champion side.
Broadbent, Booth and Davies all starred with two tries apiece, while Castleford had a day to forget – pretty much put a line through the result – and should regroup back to their usual, better standards next week.
Wakefield Trinity 16 – 10 Wigan Warriors
A serious statement of intent from Wakefield, getting back to winning ways against defending champions Wigan. Once again spearheaded by their revelatory signing, Caius Faatili, who opened the scoring with a scything hard line in the 18th minute.
Lino was also exceptionally influential, assisting Trinity’s second try with a kick, while Jake Trueman produced some brilliance of his own with a lofted ball to Tom Johnstone for their third – which thwarted a potential Wigan comeback after a well-worked try for Adam Keighran.
The game wasn’t without the classic Jai Field brilliance, however, as he collected a chip from Harry Smith with a minute to go to run 40 metres and score a consolation try.
St Helens RLFC 18 – 4 Leeds Rhinos
A comprehensive victory for Saints, who took points when on offer – opening with two Kyle Feldt penalties – to build a score and consequently apply scoreboard pressure on Leeds. Some excellent defence helped keep their visitors at bay too, with Harry Robertson producing a miraculous try-saver on a long-range Ryan Hall effort at the back end of the first half.
The Rhinos ultimately couldn’t peg back the half-time lead (8–0) set by the Red V, with just one try from Riley Lumb. Finally, Owen Dagnall proved a menace in the second half, producing a decisive carry and finish to put the game further out of reach before Tristan Sailor got one of his own on the stroke of full-time.
Warrington Wolves 16 – 24 Huddersfield Giants
The Giants sprung an upset against a Warrington side that is seemingly still reeling from the heartbreaking Challenge Cup Final loss. The Wolves, however, stepped up from their loss at Leeds last week but just couldn’t produce enough to beat a buoyed Huddersfield side.
They opened the scoring against the run of play with an interception break and then built on the try with one from Jake Bibby on the left edge. Marc Sneyd answered for the hosts with a strong finish of his own, but the Warrington defence left more to be desired in the first half – allowing 20 points. Jacob Gagai all but sealed the result with his second try of the game in the 64th minute, before Warrington mounted a late comeback to make the scoreline more respectable.
Catalans Dragons 12 – 26 Leigh Leopards
Catalans’ woes continued with a seventh loss on the bounce and their third in a row at home. Leigh used the opportunity to push into third place with a third consecutive win, in which their overseas contingent starred.
Tesi Niu and Keanan Brand scored back-to-back tries towards the back end of the first half, before Tevita Pangai Junior got one back for the home side just before half-time. Tommy Makinson finished off a well-worked Catalans attack through the middle to level the scores (12–12) after converting his own try.
The two sides traded sets for the middle part of the second half, before Catalans lost a challenge that also resulted in Pangai Junior heading to the bin for high contact. Fellow former NRL players Joe Ofahengaue and David Armstrong made the Dragons pay soon after with tries in quick succession to put the game out of reach.
Salford Red Devils 6 – 38 Hull FC
An improved result for Salford, who produced a good first half to hold the Black and Whites to a 6–14 half-time lead. Even after an early Cade Cust try, Salford rallied and Chris Hankinson levelled up halfway through the half – before FC scored two tries towards the back end of the half to go in ahead.
They folded somewhat in the second half, unfortunately, but still limited the damage to one of their lower totals conceded this season. In addition, credit has to be given to the strong Hull FC attack that culminated in tries from Sam Eseh, Zak Hardaker and Harvey Barron, while defensive pressure gifted Tom Briscoe his four-pointer.
