MATCHDAY PREVIEW
A week after beating the North Queensland Cowboys, the Broncos won the ‘Battle of Brisbane,’ defeating the Dolphins 20-12 on a wet track at Suncorp Stadium. One man – who had been at three other clubs and found his way back to the Broncos – stood tall. Gehamat Shibasaki showed Michael Maguire why keeping him in the centres was the right choice. A call that was seemingly missed from the touch judge and Bunker possibly cost the Dolphins a chance at levelling the score in the first half. Still, the Dolphins had their chances, but the defence of the Broncos and poor handling in the rain cost them.
Backrower Jordan Riki is out of this week’s game due to suspension. Brendan Piakura moves from the bench to the forward pack. Jaiyden Hunt is the new face on the bench. Tyson Smoothy is the 18th Man.
The Tigers were looking for their third win in a row on Sunday evening. The problem was they came up against a Warriors side growing in confidence each week. Despite the loss, the signs are good for the Tigers this season. They are showing a resolve they didn’t have in 2024. Players like Fonua Pole, who scored a good try, and Latu Fainu are playing good football. While they didn’t win, there will be plenty for the Tigers faithful to cheer about this season.
After injuring his groin in the warm-up last week, Adam Doueihi has been named in the centres. Jack Bird moves back to the bench. Jarome Luai is out through suspension. Latu Fainu will play at halfback. Luke Laulilii has been named on the wing, and Solomona Faataape has been named in the reserves.
The Tigers’ young halves face one of the most experienced halves combinations: Adam Reynolds and Ben Hunt. Galvin and Fainu can show what they are capable of and why Tigers fans should be excited for the future with them at the club. The situation can’t overawe them, and they need to play their natural games.
A mouth-watering match-up in the forwards will be between Payne Haas and Fonua Pole. Haas is in the best form of his career and will need to be stopped if the Tigers have a chance of winning. Pole will need to be on his game to match it with Haas, but he is more than capable of doing the job.
