MATCHDAY PREVIEW

Two luckless Queensland sides go head-to-head this round when the eleventh-placed Broncos host the last-placed Titans. With both sets of fans having had little to cheer for this year, at least one will go away a winner.

The home side, the Broncos, have been nothing short of dreadful in 2025. Last round, they were flogged by the Manly Sea Eagles 34–6. They have only chalked up five wins this season, which is well below par for a side that is not vastly different to the one that made the 2023 Grand Final. This is a must-win game if they’re to get their season back on track.

In a huge inclusion, star fullback Reece Walsh has been named to start. Further, Selwyn Cobbo returns to the wing, while Corey Jensen and Brendan Piakura will both start. It’s about as close to full strength as the Broncos can get — and on paper, they remain a high-quality team.

If the Broncos have been dreadful, find an adjective worse than that for the Titans. Though expectations may not have been as high for them in 2025, they have an exciting team of speedsters, and some might have considered them a smoky for the finals at the season’s start. But with only three wins to date and few signs of improvement, they’re shaping up as favourites to take home the wooden spoon.

It won’t be easy for them, especially with their star player, AJ Brimson, sidelined under concussion protocols. It only gets worse, with Jojo Fifita ruled out with a broken hand, which sees Allan Fitzgibbon take his place on the wing and Phil Sami shift into the centres. Finally, Sean Mullany steps in for the injured Sam Verrills. It’s injuries galore for a side that can’t afford to be missing anyone.

On paper, the Broncos should win comfortably. If you were to match up each player across both teams, the Broncos come out on top in most positions. However, if this season has proven anything, it’s that the best team on paper isn’t always the best team on the night. If the Broncos turn up with the attitude that it should “just happen” — which is what they’ve been accused of repeatedly this year — they’ll be in for a shock.

Maguire will be emphasising the simple stuff: complete your sets, kick to the corners, chase the ball. Maintain line-speed, avoid silly penalties. Earn the right to score points, and the points will come. Reece Walsh, in his first game back, shouldn’t be afraid to play footy, but he also shouldn’t be trying to shift the ball from his 30-metre line. If the Broncos turn up respecting their opposition, they win.

The Titans will need to find something deep within themselves to claim victory. Though outmatched in terms of personnel, they do have representative forwards in Regan Campbell-Gillard and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, and they’ll need those two to lead from the front. The Broncos’ defence ranks among the worst in the competition, and if the Titans can match them through the middle, their backs — like Jayden Campbell, Alofiana Khan-Pereira, and Brian Kelly — have the speed and spark to put points on the board.

Ultimately, this game could end up being a tight one. The Broncos are in no form to be racking up big scores, and the Titans should be desperate enough to push them. Expect a nervy finish, with the Broncos’ classy team list perhaps just enough to get them over the line.
