Canterbury-Bankstown (22 points, +74) remains on top of ladder after round 13: the two bye points keeping them ahead of Canberra (20, +72), NZ Warriors (20, +5), and Melbourne (18, +147). Cronulla-Sutherland (16, +44), North Queensland (15 -28), Manly Warringah (14, +46), and St George Illawarra (14, +3) round out the top eight.

Canberra won their third straight game, beating the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium. There was some controversy late in the first half when Simi Sasagi was denied a try to put the Raiders in front, with Owen Pattie ruled to be offside from the Sasagi kick. James Tedesco scored just before the break to put the Roosters ahead 12-4. The Roosters extended their lead to 18-8 before Hudson Young, Joseph Tapine, and Ethan Strange put Canberra eight in-front with six minutes left. Making his Raiders first grade debut, Ethan Sanders showed his composure by converting all three tries. Backing up from his Origin debut, Robert Toia gave the Roosters a sniff, scoring with a minute left.

The NZ Warriors held on against South Sydney at Accor Stadium. The Warriors led 30-12 after 55 minutes, but Alex Johnston’s hat-trick (including his 200th try as he closes in on Ken Irvine’s record), cut the margin to six points before Roger Tuivasa-Sheck’s second try sealed the win. Both goalkickers had an afternoon out: Luke Metcalf scored 12 points (a try and four goals) and Latrell Mitchell 14 (a try and five goals).

Sualauvi Faalogo and Grant Anderson both scored doubles in Melbourne’s win over the Gold Coast at Cbus Super Stadium. There was an eventful moment in the 64th minute: with Melbourne leading 22-10, Sam Verrills dived over, but the Bunker ruled that Ryan Papenhuyzen was impeded, and the try was disallowed. On the next set, Anderson scored a 90-metre intercept try to give Melbourne a 28-10 lead. But the Titans kept the game alive with Phillip Sami’s second try, cutting Melbourne’s lead back to 12 with 13 minutes left.

North Queensland survived a Wests Tigers fightback at Queensland Country Bank Stadium. The Cowboys were cruising at 32-6 after 58 minutes (Scott Drinkwater scoring 12 points from a try and four goals): their first four tries were scored against 12 men, with Jarome Luai (11th minute) and Adam Doueihi (36th minute) sin binned. But Starford To’a’s second try kickstarted the comeback as they scored four tries in 13 minutes.

Clayton Faulalo and Haumole Olakau’atu scored two tries each in Manly’s big win over Brisbane at 4 Pines Park. The Sea Eagles won their first home game since round 4, scoring six tries to one. It was 6-6 after 14 minutes, but that was as close as the Broncos got, with Manly scoring the next five tries to get back in the top eight, while Brisbane fell out.

St George Illawarra defeated Newcastle at Jubilee Stadium to move into the top eight. The Dragons dominated the first half, leading 18-0 at half-time. While they only scored two second half points (Valentine Holmes kicking four goals from four), Newcastle never looked like getting back into the game.

Penrith won their battle of Western Sydney against Parramatta at CommBank Stadium. Nathan Cleary backed up his Origin performance with three goals from three attempts and a 40/20 that led to Brian To’o’s match-winning try. Parramatta led 10-6 early in the second half when Josh Addo-Carr scored. The Panthers are now just three points outside the top eight, while the Eels stayed above the last-placed Gold Coast on points differential.

Women’s Origin Game 3

Queensland have won the third women’s Origin at McDonald Jones Stadium. NSW led 14-6 after 50 minutes, but Romy Teitzel and Chelsea Lenarduzzi scored to give the Maroons an 18-14 lead. NSW were attacking until the final seconds, and Queensland held on despite Lenarduzzi being sin binned on the second-last tackle, with NSW settling for 2-1 series win. Isabelle Kelly looked like scoring NSW’s first try in the 15th minute, but she failed to ground the ball over the line. Olivia Kernick won the Nellie Doherty Medal (player of the series), backing up last year’s NRLW Dally M Medal.
