They have a two-point lead over the New Zealand Warriors (16, +1), and a four-point lead over Melbourne (14, +140) and Canberra (14, +48). Cronulla-Sutherland (12, +65), North Queensland (11, -14), Brisbane (10, +46), and Manly Warringah (10, +20) round out the top eight.
In a bizarre round of comebacks, the Gold Coast (20-0) and South Sydney (14-0) also erased deficits to win their games, while St George Illawarra came from 14-0 down against the New Zealand Warriors, North Queensland came from 30-18 down against Penrith, and Manly came from 14-0 down against Cronulla.
The Bulldogs took just 14 minutes to wipe Canberra’s lead in the second half, with tries to Stephen Crichton, Jaeman Salmon, Marcelo Montoya, and Max King. Viliame Kikau and Jacob Kiraz completed the Bulldogs’ domination and ended Canberra’s five-game winning streak. Canberra initially responded to the sold-out home crowd, with Zac Hosking, Kaeo Weekes, Xavier Savage, and Hudson Young giving the Raiders their 20-0 half-time lead.
Luke Metcalf scored 11 of the NZ Warriors’ 15 points as they beat St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium. It’s the Warriors’ third win in Australia this season. Trailing 14-0 after 30 minutes, St George Illawarra tied the game at 14-14 (tries to Clinton Gutherson, Dylan Egan, and Corey Allan). But a Metcalf one-point field goal put the Warriors back infront with 11 minutes left.
Ryan Papenhuyzen scored 36 points (four tries and 10 goals) as Melbourne demolished the Wests Tigers at AAMI Park. After their controversial Magic Round loss to Canberra, the ruthless Storm took out their frustrations on the Tigers. The Storm raced the clock in the first half, leading 36-0 at half-time (including a Papenhuyzen hat-trick). Unlike Souths, the Gold Coast, and Canterbury-Bankstown, there was no magical comeback from the Tigers, with Melbourne scoring another five second half tries.
North Queensland and Penrith had the first draw of 2025 at Queensland Country Bank Stadium. It was deadlocked after 90 minutes as both sides missed Golden Point field goal shots. With the Cowboys trailing 30-18, Robert Derby and Tom Dearden scored to force Golden Point. Derby’s try helped make up for an unfortunate night, with five errors, including one on his tryline that led to a Blaize Talagi try. Luke Garner scored a double for Penrith.
Cronulla survived a fightback against Manly Warringah at 4 Pines Park. While Cronulla led 14-0 at half-time (tries to Ronaldo Mulitalo and Addin Fonua-Blake), the Sea Eagles continued this round’s comeback trend, levelling up at 14-14 after 61 minutes (a double to Tolutau Koula). The Sharks kicked away with three more tries – including Mulitalo’s second.
Latrell Mitchell kicked a 48-metre two-point field goal and a late try as South Sydney beat Brisbane at Accor Stadium. Brisbane was cruising against a Souths side decimated by injury, leading 14-0 at half-time, but Souths cut the margin to two early in the second half. A Mitchell penalty goal levelled up the game with 10 minutes left, followed by his field goal, and the sneaky dummy half try in the final seconds. He finished with 14 points (a try, a two-point field goal, and four goals). Souths broke a four-game losing streak, while Brisbane have lost four of their last five.
The Dolphins won their first game outside Queensland this season, beating Parramatta at CommBank Stadium. The game came to life after 60 minutes when Connelly Lemuelu and Herbie Farnworth turned a 12-6 deficit into an 18-12 lead. Parramatta set up a grandstand finish when Dylan Brown scored with eight minutes left. The Eels were attacking in the final minute as Josh Addo-Carr made a break and passed to Brown (who was heading for the corner), but Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow shut the play down. The loss kept the Eels in last place.
Try doubles to Phillip Sami and AJ Brimson helped the Gold Coast beat Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium. The Knights looked like they’d continued on from their Magic Round win, leading 20-0 after 28 minutes (tries to Dylan Lucas, Fletcher Sharpe, and Mat Croker). Sami’s first try shortly before half-time kickstarted the Titans: he scored his second try early in the second half, followed by Brimson’s double – his second sealing the win in the 77th minute (grounding an Alofiana Khan-Pereira grubber). While the Titans broke a five-game losing streak, Newcastle have now lost six of their last seven. It’s the Titans’ second win over Newcastle this season.
